When I first came to this mountain, I felt it was a special place, a magical place. Over the years, I’ve seen many strange things here. Although I have no magic, as some here have, I observe nature.
Many in my village in Mexico believed in de Hadas, the fairies, and I learned that you must respect them. My friend, Juan, comes from a long line of curenderos. When his grandfather died, his mother sent the old man’s currendero mask and other trappings to Juan. He is now learning the ways of his ancestors.
I first met my boss, Dan, on a city street corner many years ago. He was waiting to get day work, so I took a chance and hired him on my crew. Later, I tried to understand that he had come from another time. It explained why he was undocumented. When I found out that Dan was descended from the bruja, Anna Mae, I knew he also had magic. His daughter, Anna, possesses this power. I know she will become a great bruja in time.
Now Dan and I and a few from the old crew work together in the cabinet shop. I wait, watch, and hope for the future.
