I met Rob Johnson after the war. The vengeful men controlling Morgan County exacted reprisals from returning Rebel soldiers, and Rob was fighting to keep his land. I could see that he was smart and determined, qualities I admire.
After they took Rob’s farm, I offered him a job. My law clerk had left and I thought Rob would make a good lawyer. In my business, I have to be an astute judge of men, and I knew Rob could become a powerful force in the courtroom. He worked weekdays in my Martinsburg law office and went home to his young daughter on weekends. That little girl was the center of his life and he worked hard to provide for her, but he was a lonely man.
My wife introduced him to several of her young nieces, but Rob wasn’t interested. He said he’d already chosen a lady, but there were problems.
